About us: LDS (Learning Disabilities Society) is a growing, innovative, research-based, nonprofit charity serving children, youth and adults with diagnosed or suspected learning differences like dyslexia, written-output disorders, ADHD and more.
Locations: East Vancouver Learning Centre (3292 E Broadway @ Rupert), online (online only and hybrid are options) and/or our mobile classroom vehicle. Please indicate availability for each location in your application form response.
Note: We are actively looking for two strong elementary generalists (instructional skills for teaching math and literacy topics for learners in kindergarten to grade 7) for our Access mobile classroom in the Southeast Vancouver area / East 41st area on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 2:30-7:30pm. Can be combined with more availability in our East Vancouver location or online on other days.
Our Instructors: Our instructors are experienced educators with a passion for making learning accessible, engaging, and possible for learners who find learning difficult and have skills and experience in delivering instruction in at least one of the following three academic areas: reading, writing and/or math.
Our instructors come from a range of backgrounds, including teaching, special education, academic tutoring, adult education and behavioural intervention and are looking for opportunities to apply and develop their professional practice, skills, and knowledge within a collegial environment and organization focused on transforming the educational experience of our students.
Start Date: Currently Accepting applications for the 2024/2025 academic year - approx. start date late August 2024. A school-year commitment is required. Our programs run September-June with the school calendar with breaks over the December holiday period and Spring Break (March).
Contract/Part-time: 8-20+ hours a week. Minimum availability is from 4:30 – 7:30pm on two weekday afternoons/evenings. Hours available are Monday to Friday between 2:30 and 7:30pm and/or Saturdays between 9:00am and 5:00pm. Strong preference will be given to those who can offer Saturday availability.
Remuneration: Contractors: $28.00 to $33.00 per hour, professional development opportunities.
Instructor Responsibilities:
- Deliver one-to-one instruction to help bridge foundational skills gaps for students
- Administer assessments to help identify gaps in student’s learning
- Work with evidenced-based curricula to develop lesson plans based on assessments
- Set goals and objectives for each student with the support of a Case Manager
- Write progress reports for students
- Provide brief session summaries to parents/families
- Be punctual to all student sessions
- Attend instructor in-services and workshops throughout the year
- Contribute to our team learning and be an advocate for learning differences and our work in the community
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor degree in education or a related field with educational experience
- Experience working with children with diagnosed or suspected learning differences
- Ability to use assessment strategies and instruments to identify gaps in learning
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Self-motivated and self-directed
- Experience teaching in two or more of the following areas: reading, writing and/or mathematics
- An understanding of the BC curriculum
- An understanding of structured literacy (for literacy instructors; please describe this in your cover letter)
- Orton-Gillingham training or other structured literacy experience (asset)
- Experience working with adult learners (asset)
- Experience managing complex behavioural profiles (asset)
- Criminal record check with the vulnerable sector
- Eligibility to work in Canada
